And then I saw this post on the local BBC website. I\u2019ll copy the text, since there\u2019s no specific link to the actual post:<\/p>\n

Fire extinguishers ‘go missing’ from Nottingham tower block<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fire extinguishers at a Nottingham tower block have gone missing from all the floors – sparking concerns over safety.<\/p>\n

One Manvers Court resident told the BBC they are worried in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire – which claimed the lives of at least 79 people.<\/p>\n

The Sneinton resident said: “All the fire extinguishers have gone missing from all the floors… there used to be fire extinguishers all the way up on every floor but they have all gone now.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Up to this point, I assumed it must be vandals (if you know Sneinton, you\u2019ll understand). But the BBC contacted Nottingham City Homes and got a response:<\/p>\n

When asked by the BBC why some blocks no longer had fire extinguishers, Nottingham City Homes chief executive Nick Murphy said: “Each of our tower blocks has a current fire risk assessment, this makes sure we have identified all the fire risks in the block and that we have got measures to reduce those fire risks and we do that on the advice of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.<\/p>\n

“In previous fire risk assessments, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service has said leave putting out fires to the professionals.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The bit at the bottom has been emboldened by me.<\/p>\n

Maybe I\u2019m jumping to conclusions here, but this seems to say that the Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) has either said \u2013 or been misinterpreted as saying by Nottingham City Homes \u2013 that fire extinguishers should be removed because putting fires out is their<\/strong> job.<\/p>\n

I can see this one running and running.<\/p>\n

The cynical (but fairly knowledgeable on the subject) part of me is also shouting that fire extinguisher supply and maintenance costs money. Conversely, not having or maintaining them doesn\u2019t cost any money at all. Frighteningly, it is quite possible that NFRS has<\/strong> said that extinguishers aren\u2019t needed if they have carried out a fire risk assessment and drawn that conclusion. The only concrete law is that if<\/strong> you have them, they must<\/strong> be regularly maintained. No law says you have to have them.<\/p>\n

I reckon a week \u2013 fortnight, tops – and there\u2019ll be fire extinguishers back where they should be.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
