However, the DSA has just sent out an email alert with the information concerning how an ADI should behave on test &#8211; they refer to it as <em>&#8216;Observer on test&#8217; etiquette<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I think it is useful that the DSA puts this sort of thing out into the public domain\u00a0&#8211; but I&#8217;m also quite sure that\u00a0the usual crowd of\u00a0stirrers and rakers\u00a0will have the ammunition they need all ready and waiting in order to start calling &#8216;liar, liar&#8217;! We&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Observer on test etiquette <\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Get the best performance out of your pupils by brushing up on your observer etiquette.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Your \u2018observer on test\u2019 etiquette could help or hinder your pupils. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Following enquiries from approved driving instructors and suggestions made by DSA examiners, some \u2018dos and don\u2019ts\u2019 have been drawn up, just so we\u2019re all clear. We hope the following are helpful\u2026 <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Turn off your phone<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Whether it\u2019s Star Wars or Tom Jones, your pupil\u2019s concentration will be thrown when the ring tone shrills out, so turn your phone off. The fewer distractions, the better. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Lend a helping hand<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Helping your pupils lift the bonnet if they are struggling is fine, but don\u2019t interfere unnecessarily. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Take a back seat<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Supervising examiners usually regard sitting behind the pupil as the least intrusive. But the best position for you is wherever it\u2019s the most comfortable, so long as you can sit upright with the seatbelt correctly fitted. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Mirror, signal, manoeuvre?<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Contrary to popular belief, you won\u2019t have your candidate\u2019s test terminate for naturally looking left, right and behind you. But try not to put your pupil off. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And be aware that overzealous nodding coupled with excessive eye contact with your pupil could be construed as some sort of pre-arranged code. In other words &#8211; cheating! Don\u2019t be tempted. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Prompting pupils by coughing, or nudging the back of them seat is a slippery road to test termination. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Examiners do know when instruction is being added &#8211; even in another language! <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Move it<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Changing position to improve your pupils\u2019 visibility during the manoeuvre exercises is perfectly acceptable. Constantly moving from side to side to would be very distracting though, so please try to keep movement to a minimum. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Take note<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By all means take notes to help your pupil. But bear in mind that if your pupil sees you rigorously note taking it might worry them and fill their head with negative thoughts &#8211; when actually they might be doing fine. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>No comment<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last tip. At the end of the test listen carefully to the feedback so that you and your pupil can work together. But don\u2019t be tempted to involve the examiner in discussion. If you do have genuine concerns about the test speak to the local manager, or follow the complaints procedure. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Following the relaunch on 6 April initial indications look promising with a significant increase in the take up of \u2018observer on test\u2019. Similarly, whenever I&#8217;m there (at either Colwick or Chalfont Drive), I would say that maybe one ADI out of every ten trots off outside.
