A story from the Plymouth Herald suggests that there is statistical evidence that drivers slowing down merely for the cameras does result in fewer accidents and deaths.<\/p>\n

It’s not rocket science, really.<\/p>\n

Devon and Cornwall roads still claim at least one life every week. However, this is 40% down since the cameras were introduced – though the story makes it clear that the reduction is not entirely due to cameras.<\/p>\n

Yet government cutbacks mean that cameras across the country are going to have to be taken out.<\/p>\n

The Herald says:<\/p>\n

The Government’s view, expressed through the Department of Transport, is a mealy-mouthed abdication of that responsibility, on this issue. While it says it would “expect road safety to remain a priority” it has removed the ring-fencing on grants so that local authorities can make up their own mind where they spend the funds they raise. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
