They &#8211; or rather, IAM &#8211; says that the average 17-year old would have to pay \u00a312,300, and the average 18-21 year old \u00a314,400.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 180px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 180\/156;margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6998 lazyload\" title=\"Mr Nonsense\" alt=\"Mr Nonsense\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.diaryofanadi.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/mr_nonsense.gif\" width=\"180\" height=\"156\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why it goes up as you get older, but the breakdown of these figures also raises an eyebrow or two.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently, the new driver typically pays \u00a33,000 for a five-year-old Kia Picanto, and \u00a37,900 for insurance.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sorry, but those figures are nothing like anything I experience as &quot;an average&quot;. I can&#8217;t think of any pupil who has paid more than \u00a32,800 for insurance &#8211; that was on a Ford Ka. Other cars have included Fiestas, Puntos, Corsas, Saxos, Clios&#8230; but no Kia Picantos that I can recall. I think someone somewhere has forgotten that there is intelligent life outisde London. Those figures might be correct for mummy\u2019s Beemer or daddy\u2019s Ferrari in Chelsea, but up here &#8211; north of Watford &#8211; insurance on cars is still affordable, albeit still more expensive than it used to be.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, one of mine who passed recently is buying a Renault Megane for just over \u00a31,000, and his insurance is around \u00a32,000 for him and his girlfriend (who also passed with me recently).
