I noticed someone asking why Google\u2019s homepage was suddenly \u201cHTTPS\u201d instead of \u201cHTTP\u201d. Before anyone blames the DSA for it, Google announced a while back<\/a> what it was doing.<\/p>\n

\u2026today [Tuesday, 18 October 2011] we announced that SSL Search on https:\/\/www.google.com<\/font><\/a> will become the default experience for signed in users<\/font><\/a> on google.com. This change will be rolling out over the next few weeks. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

If you log out of Google you get plain old http:\/\/www.google.com<\/a>, but if you\u2019re logged in you get the HTTPS version.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a little annoying because it blocks search terms being passed to your analytical software. As several people have written in the comments to the announcement, Google can use data how it likes to drive business \u2013 but others can\u2019t.<\/p>\n
