Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000080\">Motorists, including motorcyclists, <strong>MUST<\/strong> stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000080\">If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you <strong>MUST<\/strong> stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000080\">Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#800000\">Read all the rules about road junctions (170-183)<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; display: inline; float: left\" title=\"Cyclist Forward Area\" alt=\"Cyclist Forward Area\" align=\"left\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.direct.gov.uk\/prod_consum_dg\/groups\/dg_digitalassets\/@dg\/@en\/documents\/digitalasset\/dg_070536.jpg\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/>I noticed recently someone was giving ridiculous advice about stopping in the cyclists\u2019 forward area. Perhaps they should read this and learn.<\/p>\n<p>As I explained in <a title=\"Advanced Stop Lines\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diaryofanadi.co.uk\/?p=9093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><font color=\"#800000\">an article I wrote when I saw that<\/font><\/a>, the word <font color=\"#ff0000\"><strong>MUST<\/strong><\/font> (in bold red text in the paper copy) means that you must stop &#8211; by law &#8211; at the first line under normal circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>These days you\u2019d be forgiven for thinking that the marked area with the bicycle symbol is for taxis, Audis, and Corsas with loud exhausts and tinted windows. It isn\u2019t, and the use of this space by those drivers bears tribute to how poor they really are when it comes to driving.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re driving along <strong>normally<\/strong> and the lights change, you either stop at the first line or carry on. If you stop in the cyclists\u2019 area then you\u2019ve done it wrong (except in heavy traffic if the junction is blocked).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More timely advice from the DSA, this time concerning junctions.
