CRB Check Is Now DBS Check

An email alert advises that the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check is now known as the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. Read more here.

Note that this link applies to England and Wales only – it’s a different process in Scotland and Northern Ireland (links for those are in the link above).

Note that ADIs are required to get one of these – the enhanced one – each time they renew their licence, and one is required to become a PDI.

How do I know if my DBS check is OK?

When it comes back, if it doesn’t say anything about you being wanted by Interpol or any other authority, you’re probably good to go.

It’s best if it is completely “blank” (like mine is). If there is ANYTHING in ANY of the sections – and especially if it is related to driving, drugs, violence, or children – you’ll need to check with DVSA to see if it’s a problem. It could be, and even if it isn’t, it probably should be – DVSA is dumbing down at the moment and you might get lucky even if you are still stealing cars and engaging in high-speed police pursuits (as the “pursuiee”) for a living.

You won’t find the answer on the internet, so don’t go spending any money on training until you have been accepted on to the Register.

Law On Foreign Licence Exchange Tightened

This email alert just came in. From 11 January 2013 (four days ago), the law has changed such that foreign drivers wishing to exchange their overseas licence for a UK one will have to prove that they have passed a test of comparable standard to the UK one.

This is a DVLA issue and nothing to do with the DSA.

Anyone from any EU member state can drive here and exchange their licence without having to take a test. There are also a number of ‘designated’ countries outside the EU which the UK has an arrangement with (typically, Commonwealth or former-Commonwealth countries, but not exclusively so – Korea is in there, and Switzerland).

But it seems that some of those countries allow foreign nationals from places where driving standards are poor to exchange their licences, and those people then have a shiny licence from a designated country to exchange over here. That’s the loophole that has been stopped by having to provide proof of having completed a test.

The only thing that’s niggling me is how they are going to police and enforce this.

Lying and fraud is second nature to some people and I don’t doubt for a moment that they will use such tactics to get the necessary “proof”. And how will the DVLA check?

Your guess is as good as mine.

A Reader Writes… Bill Plant Saga

I received an email via the Contact Form a little earlier. It reads:

I’d like to bring to your attention some comments about this photo. I find it shocking so called professionals can make fun of this and suggest it is right or deserving of the driver or learner…

Take my word for it, in the full-size picture the young girl looks highly traumatised, and it is quite likely that they are waiting for an ambulance to arrive. In the absence of any further information, you can just see a car on the opposite side of the road, and the school car has obviously hit something head-on – but there’s no way of knowing which way it was heading and whether it spun round. If it was heading away in the picture, it is on the correct side of the road, so who is to say what happened or who was to blame? Well, ADIs, of course, because they know everything.

As an aside, one of the most popular pages on this blog is the one that shows a BSM car upside down. I monitor search terms used to get here, and you wouldn’t believe what people ask to find that particular story. There really are some very, very nasty pieces of work around, and the word “schadenfreude” doesn’t cover them by half. Since I doubt that the general public has such a major fetish  about other driving schools, it’s not hard to imagine who and what these visitors are.

I agree completely with the reader’s assessment. Any comments implying that this accident is in some way “good” or in any way typifies Bill Plant instructors or the school isn’t fit to be an instructor themselves. Some of them seem happy to give the ADI’s name out on forums, when it is absolutely none of their damned business – I mean, the only reason for doing that would be to take a swipe at the Bill Plant School.

I would hope that those involved in this childish gloating remember it the next time they’re rear-ended or are hit by another car, and some prat with a camera takes a photo and plasters it all over the internet.

For myself, I hope that both the pupil and the instructor involved in the above accident are all right. I hope that the instructor in question gets back to work as soon as possible, and that the pupil gets back to learning. The simple fact is that being a Bill Plant franchisee doesn’t make anyone a bad instructor.


A little more information is available now. The accident happened in Leeds, and it is the Topic Of The Moment on Bill Plant’s Facebook page. The Bill Plant (BP) car “crashed into a house” – though we still don’t know why.

The timeline appears to be that the accident happened on Christmas Eve. The instructor was taken to hospital. Bill Plant Ltd was unaware of the incident until 8th January, when they “received an abusive call from the householder”. The house, pupil, and instructor all survived and the police are investigating. A public apology has been issued. As I say, no one knows exactly what happened yet – the BP car didn’t just do a 90 degree turn into a house without some trigger.

As another aside, the only criticism I would have of BP is that they have a Facebook page and allow so many retards to post on it. Some of them are ADIs who aren’t franchised to BP, and BP’s reputation among many of these instructors means that they’re just there to cause trouble. BP has a proper website, but Facebook is how most pond life attempts to communicate these days.

The strata of society that these idiots occupy can be clearly gleaned from some of the comments on the BP Facebook page.

Most of the primates on BP’s Facebook page seem obsessed with the concept of “an apology”. It’s ironic that most Facebook users have never apologised to anyone in their entire lives – and they probably will never do so. It’s the kind of people they are. This one, for example, seems to like the sound of his own keyboard (shame about the grammar, even though he’s allegedly a graduate) and answers himself repeatedly. Still, at least he can spell “apologise” after having repeated it so many times:

It’s important to maintain the balance here, and the house owner has contacted me and explained it from his perspective. Here’s his message in full:

I’m the home-owner whose photo that is / was.

It’s genuine. The car crashed into my house and it’s crumpled where it has bounced back off our side wall. My 4 year old daughter and one year old son were in the front room the other side of that wall and got a massive scare as it made a mighty bang having hit it with enough force to write the car off.

The original post I made on their page was a comment about Bill Plant’s terrible Customer Service rather than the accident per se, learner drivers or the instructor. Obviously like most things that go viral it got OTT and hijacked by all sorts of trolls and lunatics as your rightly highlight.

After no contact from the SoM at the scene or for 15 days after the accident, I rang them, ostensibly to get their insurer’s details (which naturally my insurer’s would require).

I was dealt with by a woman who intially wouldnt identify herself, nor give me their insurer’s details (finally got them out of her) and only the first name of her manager and no email or phone number as it was ‘against company policy’.

Having asked them whether it was appropriate for me to be doing all the leg work when ‘they’ had crashed into my house I got a rather useful ‘I didnt crash into your house’ from the woman on the phone. Nice to see someone taking ownership of the issue within the company.

I said ‘bloody’ once such was my frustration, which resulted in her hanging up (though she continued the conversation when I rang back about 90s later) and they’re now are making massive schtick about me being abusive!).

Their company statement is a joke and full of inaccuracies but I simply can’t be bothered anymore.

I’ve made my point.

As you correctly point out, if they understood social media or had a proper web manager, they could have controlled and sorted this themselves.

As I said in my reply to him, my own insurance company would forbid me from becoming directly involved if a claim or police investigation was in progress. I also pointed out that the matter is really between him and BP, and that BP is reviled in the industry for complex reasons associated almost wholly with their start-up deal of “5 for £56”, and it was that which fuelled much of the ridiculous venom that was seen on Facebook and in other places.

I think this is one of those things which shouldn’t really have got into the public domain in the first place and – as is becoming increasingly obvious – involving Facebook in any way with a reputable business or genuine issue is just asking for trouble.

In the situation here, if an outsider really found it necessary to poke their nose in, the only thing they could possibly conclude is that – assuming all the information is completely accurate – perhaps BP could have handled it better. Unfortunately, any large company is likely to have difficulty in that department, and especially so if they try to do it through Facebook.

How BP handled it is simply none of the business of other ADIs. It is between the house owner and BP themselves. Other people don’t know the circumstances which led to the accident – the universal assumption that the BP car just drove into a house without any reason is typical of these idiots.


This post is attracting a lot of hits, and it seems that the concept that who is to blame, or who is liable, is between the parties directly involved is proving a little difficult for some to grasp. It is not the duty of a bunch of venomous ADI to deal with it.

I’ve written about it fairly objectively. I have not judged anyone (other than the morons who have made those idiotic comments), and especially not BP. However, the sad fact is that plenty of other ADIs are eager to be judge, jury, and executioner simply because they hate BP. Frighteningly, they actually believe the bile that comes from their own mouths!

An ADI who is franchised to Bill Plant is not automatically at fault for anything which happens on the roads. Please try to understand that!

One more thing – and I’ve explained it before for the morons who keep bringing it up – this is MY blog and comments are turned off because I’m not interested in any abuse from these bottom dwellers. Live with it.


Incidentally, as of 2017 I can find absolutely no reference to this on Google at all. I was interested in what had happened, but the news has disappeared.

As well as no information of any kind being available, even this blog article is completely absent – even if I use the exact article title. I normally appear in searches very quickly. Very curious.

Scammy Test Booking Sites Get Comeuppance

This adjudication from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is interesting.

All of these test booking services (all the ones I have seen, anyway) are absolute scum. If they were 100% honest, even the good ones would say:

We are not the official booking site, and we have nothing at all to do with the DSA. We charge you extra for the test we book for you, and for that you get access to online training materials.

The problem is they don’t. They deliberately make themselves look like the DSA’s site, and any disclaimer is carefully hidden as deeply as possible so that those using the The old DSA test booking logoservice have almost zero chance of spotting it before they’ve entered their credit card details. No one reads the fine print in detail, and even if they did they probably wouldn’t understand it. You’re talking about 17-year old kids, and the pond life operating such sites knows that full well.

In this particular case, Book Your Practical Test Online Ltd. (BYPT) tried to squirm out of the complaint by arguing that their site didn’t look like the DSA one, because the DSA “did not use orange and white on their home page”. Fortunately, ASA were fully aware that until GOV.UK came along, that’s EXACTLY what the DSA site looked like. Orange and white. BYPT even tried to argue that their logo had an arrow that was different to the one the DSA used – trying to avoid the issue of why they’d even got a logo that was so similar to the DSA/Directgov one. Oh yes, they knew exactly what they were doing.

Fortunately, so did ASA, and it upheld the complaint in full.

Halfords To Commence Hosting Of Driving Tests

An email alert from the DSA says that Halfords has been given the “green light for driving tests”. I wish they’d word the headlines properly so that it doesn’t lead to confusion!

Halfords LogoHalfords is NOT going to be providing driving tests, and the spotty oiks who hang around out back smoking roll-ups (and who all have modded Corsas parked outside) are NOT going to be climbing inside the car with you to decide whether you pass or fail. It will be DSA examiners just like it is now.

What is happening is that Halfords is going to be used as the start and finish point for driving tests (instead of it being a purpose-built test centre). It is commencing from Tuesday 5 February in Wellingborough.

All that the email says is that other branches around the country are expected to be offering tests in the coming months. It doesn’t say ALL of them, and it doesn’t say when.

I can’t see the need for Nottingham to do it, for example, when it already has two test centres (as well as something in the pipeline concerning “Clifton Campus” – part of Trent University).

Chalfont Drive Move Being Scuppered By ADIs

This is an old story. As of September 2014, tests are conducted at Colwick, Beeston (near the train station), Clifton (on the Trent University campus), and Watnall (the old LGV testing station).

Chalfont Drive stopped doing tests in 2013. Clarendon Street (the Trent University campus in the city centre) ceased conducting tests in late August 2014 a few weeks prior to Watnall commencing operations.

I wrote a couple of months ago reporting that Chalfont Drive test centre in Nottingham is relocating to Beeston, subject to planning permission.

I bet the DSA is ruing its decision to keep ADIs informed, because I saw a notice on the wall at Colwick asking instructors to stay away. Apparently, the place has been gridlocked by idiots taking their pupils there to have a look!

The problem is that the deal isn’t done yet, and there’s a good chance it won’t be as a result of morons driving down there and causing hold-ups for the tenants who already rent there.

No ADI has any need whatsoever to take their pupils there. Those who do are just bloody stupid.

Know Your Left And Right

I heard someone recently criticising their pupils’ education because they sometimes got their lefts and rights mixed up.

I encounter left-right confusion frequently when I’m teLeft or Rightaching, but never – for even a moment – have I attributed it to the standard of someone’s education. In fact, it is a known – but not completely understood – scientific phenomenon (it’s also one of the symptoms of dyslexia, though not necessarily one experienced by all dyslexics).

Kids are taught their lefts and rights from the earliest age, and when they turn 17 – unless they’re dyslexic and this is one of their symptoms – they know exactly where left and right are.

Indeed, when I was a child I had no problem at all with telling left from right, or in being able to identify one or the other instantly, and I don’t have a problem now. But for about 4 or 5 years in my late teens and early 20s I went through a phase where I often had to think hard about which was which when challenged to do so for some reason. As a typical teenager, it really had me worried because I knew there was an issue where there wasn’t one before. But it disappeared as suddenly as I’d noticed it appear. In later years I have always attributed it to the changes that occur as people mature physically. I am not dyslexic in any way, either.

The problem, as distinct from dyslexia, apparently affects around 20-25% of the population. Even if you leave out my own theory of it affecting young people more than older ones, that still means a quarter of your pupils are likely to encounter difficulties.

It can be a particular problem on driving lessons and driving tests. Why? Well, if someone is just driving to Tesco or to see their gran, they usually know where they’re going and don’t need to think about right or left – it’s just “this way” or “that way”. But on lessons and tests directional instructions are given, and the driver then has to translate “left” or “right” into real actions. That’s when the left-right confusion kicks in.

The one thing to remember is that no matter how badly someone is affected by this left-right confusion, it is not terminal as far as learning to drive is concerned.

There are all kinds of things the instructor can do or advise to try to help them. Here are just a few:

  • When you hold your left thumb and forefinger out straight, they make an ‘L’ shape
  • Draw a big dot on the left hand remember that that’s LEFT
  • Actually write ‘L’ and ‘R’ on your hands
  • Put ‘L’ and ‘R’ stickers on the dashboard (or the mirror)
  • The ADI can use gestures as well as the words ‘left’ and ‘right’ when giving directions
  • The examiner can do this, too, so ask them to use a hand gesture if you think it will help on your test
  • Stay calm and take your time when making decisions

Some of those are also advised by the British Dyslexia Association. The mirror one came from a reader.

But one thing you should never do is assume that the person in question is somehow lacking or deficient – educationally or any other way.

Left/right confusion in older people

Someone found the blog on that search term. I am not aware of a specific problem developing as people get older (that is, as they pass from their 20s to their 30s or 40s). However, confusion and slower mental response can occur when people become much older (60s and 70s onwards), and I guess left/right confusion may be one of the possible symptoms of that.

Bear in mind that some 30-somethings can be mentally older than some octogenarians, and there are no sharp divisions. Everyone is different.

If it is becoming an issue that worries you, see your GP. That’s what they’re there for. It’s unlikely, but there may be something else wrong that can be treated.

A Good Idea In Theory, But Still Missing The Point By A Mile

Another story from the newsfeeds. It involves IAM – but I won’t diss it outright since just for once they haven’t tried to blame the behaviour of the last 10 generations of young drivers on their driving instructors. Not directly, anyway.

There’s a scheme in Scotland being sponsored by a former racing driver who is now a car dealer. Basically, he has agreed to pay for 100 young drivers to take an advanced driving test. He is now trying to get other dealers to provide the same offer to further young drivers throughout Scotland.

Police in Scotland appear to be beside themselves with gushing praise:

Acting road policing Inspector Brian Jones, of Lothian and Borders Police, said: “We cannot support this enough. This is an excellent opportunity for all young drivers to take advantage of a skill for life.

“It could almost be seen as a Holy Grail – it would take five to six years to get the same experience as you get from taking the test.”

On the surface, it sounds like a good idea. But is it really the Holy Grail that everyone is looking for as the Scots police are suggesting? Let’s think about it a little more deeply – which is something none of those in the article seem to have done.

The most telling observation comes from a young driver who completed the course:

Matthew Bushell is among ten young drivers in the Borders to have had the cost of their advanced driving course refunded after passing the test.

Mr Bushell, 27, who took the test two years ago, admitted to having had a completely different attitude behind the wheel in his earlier driving days.

Note the part in bold. What he is clearly saying is that when he was young he felt differently and had a different attitude to the one he has now. His decision to complete this course – apart from the fact that it was free, I would imagine – was based on his 27-year old level of maturity, and he wouldn’t have done it when he was younger. Can we really conclude from all this that a mid-twenties male completing this course is any sort of Holy Grail for the problem of all young driver death statistics?

You have to get older before you can get wiser. By definition, maturity is age- and experience-dependent. It’s a basic law of nature, and there is no suggestion that this course could have any meaningful effect on young and very unwise attitudes that, say, a properly delivered Pass Plus course or decent learner lessons couldn’t. The article continues:

Mr Bushell signed up for the advanced driving course after meeting Bill Allison of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) at his local car club.

And there’s another problem: the piston-head mentality. Both the sponsor and the sponsored were piston-heads – members of a car club. It is hard to imagine that the sponsor (a former racing driver, now a car dealer) is financing this for purely philanthropic reasons, particularly when you bear in mind it is costing him around £13,000. The advertising he is getting from it must be offsetting that somewhat, no matter how much he might deny it. And certainly you get the impression that the sponsored Mr Bushell might not have bothered at all if he’d had to pay over a hundred quid, instead of getting it for free. But even if the meeting of these two from this particular club had what is essentially a positive outcome, there are many, many clubs where the overall attitude of the membership is far less mature. Let’s face facts here: if a group of people who own fast cars meet at the “fast car owners’ club”, the main discussion topic is inevitably going to be about driving those fast cars fast!

The sponsor is also pictured holding a copy of Roadcraft – the advanced driver’s bible. It’s worth reminding ourselves of the full title of that publication: Roadcraft – The Police Driver’s Handbook  (and yes, that’s the same emphasis that is given on the front cover). But in spite of the book’s foreword suggesting that it is also for anyone wishing to take their skills “to a higher level” (cue: a bunch of anoraks falling over themselves to copy every aspect of it), you do not invite anyone who feels like it to drive as if they were police officers on emergency calls to do so when they’re just taking the Jack Russell to Tesco to pick up their milk and a copy of The Daily Mail.

It isn’t training which is the problem. It is attitude. Advanced driving is for drivers with experience, not beginners – and even then, it’s not suitable for all of them. The sooner IAM realises this and keeps its nose out of driver training at grass roots level, the better the chance something can actually get done in the areas where the problems really lie.

Aussie Learner Gets What He Deserves

I saw this on the newsfeeds. It tells how an Australian learner driver was videoed driving with his hands behind his head for a considerable distance (20km). In the video he is seen doing it alongside oncoming traffic (sorry about the advert – you can skip it):

He isn’t named in the article, but I doubt he’ll remain anonymous for long. If he doesn’t get the bright idea of going public about it himself, I’m sure someone else will do it for him.

Police have charged the 20-year old with reckless conduct likely to cause . And so they should serious injury, dangerous driving, and failure to have control of a motor vehicle.

Let’s hope the courts throw the book at him when he goes to court on April 3rd.

This illustrates why young drivers – especially male ones – throughout the world have the most accidents. It’s because for the majority of them, until their brains mature, they’re technically prats.

DSA Advice: Motorways

I forgot to post this one, which came in on Boxing Day. It concerns motorways:

Rule 266

Approaching a junction. Look well ahead for signals or signs. Direction signs may be placed over the road. If you need to change lanes, do so in good time.

At some junctions a lane may lead directly off the motorway. Only get in that lane if you wish to go in the direction indicated on the overhead signs.
